1960 STREET LIGHT DESIGN FOR NCDC

When discussing street furniture with Sir John Overall around 1958/9 I suggested to the ACT Electricity Authority that the junction box and timing control could indeed be contained within the swell of this elegant reinforced concrete column. It was taken up by Monier (?) and produced in substantial quantities around Canberra and is unarguably the most successful street light that Canberra has seen. The saucer reflector could have been a bit larger with benefit.

Subsequent models have been badly proportioned and incredibly ugly.
