The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies required the Canberra College of Melbourne University (in the wooden huts near Civic) to amalgamate with the postgraduate ANU so that it could be a full university similar to all the other states.
It would be known as ANU but with undergraduate and research schools – School of General Studies and the existing Research Schools.
The ANU arms I always thought as being ill proportioned and top-heavy around 1963 when the Chancellery was built I managed to change the bronze arms that adorn the Chair in the Council Room – the Mills Room.
This structure has changed since I left the ANU in 1977.
