1965 PRESENTATION DECIMAL COIN BOX TO HRH PRINCE PHILIP AT THE OPENING OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN MINT

As part of my design services to the opening of the Royal Australian Mint I was asked to design a presentation box to house a set of the new decimal coinage. Hans Pillig, who worked with Fred Ward and myself in the ANU Design Unit, crafted my design into reality. From memory I believe Hans made two in black bean and the second is displayed in the Mint exhibition area, but as late as today I have been told that the ANU may also have a coin box – see scribbled note on an ANU envelope attached to the box…….

I am not certain of this fact.

The inscription engraved on the silver panel on the lid shows the awrigley-coin-box-enveloperms of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

The 3rd box must be verified with Hans asap

Since the introduction of decimal coinage in 1965 the 1 and 2 dollar coins (not shown), have been introduced because of inflation and irrelevance of the three lowest denomination coins shown on the right.

The 5,2 and 1cent coins are no longer in circulation.  All our decimal coins were designed by Stuart Devlin
