1963 RARE BOOKS DISPLAY UNIT R.G.Menzies Library, ANU

Rare books display unit with lockable drop down access flap at front and ‘fixed’ plate glass tops. One of my ‘sculptural’ approaches to furniture design determined very largely by its display function but partially by its size and weight to give stability in use.

Designed to be in harmony with the Atlas unit for the same building and later for the Chifley Library – again a sculptural approach based on function.

Made in Queensland walnut, probably by either Kees Westra or Alfons Stuestz who migrated from the Netherlands and Germany in the 1950s after WW2.
