1959 CANBERRA ART CLUB INVITATION TO 1959 EXHIBITION OF MEMBERS WORK

Hilary and I joined the Canberra Art Club at the suggestion of Fred Ward very soon after we had settled in to Canberra. We both exhibited at this exhibition but can’t remember what we put in.

I was asked to design the invitation. The club had one of the old wooden huts at Riverside, Barton previously occupied by the early construction workers who built Canberra’s infrastructure and buildings.

The Canberra Art Club was a breakaway movement from the early Artists’ Society because the latter would not accept that the crafts were ART, so the CAC catered for the more 3D aspects of ART – ceramics, sculpture, furniture, graphics etc. Those were the days !

The Artists’ Society even thought that photography could not be an ART medium – the dandelion seeds shown on the invitation were actually photograms by me done in my makeshift attic darkroom above the fireplace in our new Jansz Crescent house.
