I have to come clean – I was a founder of the Industrial Design Council of Australia with Fred Ward in 1956 (later to become the Australian Design Council ) and I was a judge at various times for the Good Design Label and for the Prince Philip Prize. I was a member for about 30 years.
It goes without saying that if you have any interest in the application you play no part in the decision making but I certainly made sure that Henry Satrapa made his application for such a prestigious award.
It certainly boosted sales which were shipped all over Australia despite their weight. In the early years of my 13 year association with Sunset P/L it was the most developed range of concrete street furniture in Australia but competition gradually came from the use of other materials such as stainless steel and recycled plastics.
