Following my retirement from the ANU Design Unit in 1977 I was invited by the Drill Hall Gallery Director, Nancy Sever to curate an exhibition of Fred Ward’s work during his time at the ANU (1954 – 1961) as Head of the ANU Design Unit.
Fred’s earlier involvement with ANU from about 1951 – 1954 was his initial commission to design all the furniture and fittings for University House which was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 16 Feb 1954. Sir Leslie Melville (then Vice Chancellor ) was so impressed by Fred’s contribution to the quality image aspired to by ANU that he asked Fred to start a Design Unit within ANU.
This exhibition was based entirely on Fred’s work rather than mine.
