This unit was designed for the Menzies (and later for the Chifley Library) to house very large atlases.
Designed to be in harmony with the Rare Books unit for the same building– again a sculptural approach based on function. Made in Queensland walnut.
Presumably digital records have been taken of all the atlases and hence there would seem to be no further use for them – or have they transferred them to dead storage – surely they have not been thrown away ? There were 3 atlas units made and I have suggested that the bases could well be re-designed to make some prestige meetings tables. I am awaiting further briefing from Amy Jarvis, ANU Heritage Officer.
